Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) released the findings of a study on internet penetration across cities. Mumbai emerged at the top with 12 million internet users, up from 8.3 million internet users in 2012.
Mumbai was followed by Delhi with 8.1 million internet users, the figure has risen from 6 million in 2012. Hyderabad registered 4.7 million internet users, which is again an increase from 3.6 million in 2012.Chennai occupied the fourth spot with 4.5 million internet users, which shows a growth from 3.4 million in 2012. Kolkata stood fifth with 4.4 million internet users, up from 3 million in 2012.
As per the report, Kolkata registered the highest YoY growth of internet users i.e. 47 per cent among top cities in India. Mumbai recorded a 45 per cent YoY growth while the IT hub of India- Bangalore registered a growth of 43 per cent. Pune, with a YoY growth of 37 per cent is fourth while Delhi with a YoY growth of 35 per cent is fifth.
Ahmedabad, with YoY growth of 26 per cent, registered the lowest growth rate among the top eight cities.
Overall, the top four metros have a 37 per cent penetration of Active Internet Users. Among the other four Metros, Hyderabad leads the charge with a penetration of 37 per cent Active Internet Users. Coimbatore with a 40 per cent penetration leads in the Small Metros category.
