Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) believes that the year 2013 was the year of internet and is of the firm view that internet has reached an inflection point.
Internet users in India have grown impressively over the years, and registered a YoY of 28 per cent in 2012. In 2013, it registered a YoY growth of 39 per cent. The growth of internet users has also led to a substantial growth of other digital industries such as e-commerce and digital advertising.
Mobile Internet in India also witnessed significant growth rate. If the following chart is anything to go by, the future of Mobile Internet in India is set to growth at an exponential rate. While in 2012, Mobile Internet grew 111 per cent, during 2013 the growth was 63 per cent.
The impact of internet penetration has led translated into a push for digital commerce. While in December 2007, the digital commerce market stood at Rs. 8,146 crore, by December 2012 it was worth Rs. 47,349 crore.
As the above figure shows, by December 2013, digital commerce in India grew to a whopping Rs. 62,967 crore. Between December 2011 and December 2012, the segment witnessed 35 per cent growth while the segment grew by 33 per cent between December 2012 and December 2013.
Digital advertising has also been witnessing a steady growth. The online advertising market in India is projected to reach Rs. 2,938 crores by March 2014, year-on-year growth in 2012 was 40 per cent while in 2013, year-on-year growth stood at 30 per cent.
