Google introduces Indoor Maps, starts with maps for select locations in 22 Indian cities
05 Mar 2014

After the hugely popular Google Maps, the Internet giant has introduced Indoor Maps in India. These Indoor Maps from Google will allow user to access detailed floor plans for 75 popular indoor venues in India on Google Maps.

Indoor Google Maps are like an indoor directory. Detailed floor plans will automatically appear when a user uses the Google Maps app on iOS and Android, and zooms in on a building where indoor map data is available, zooming out fades away the indoor Google Map.

In some locations, users will have the option of using the indoor My Location feature to help them navigate their way inside. Google has worked with partners to bring My Location feature — previously available in Google Maps for mobile for outdoor spaces — indoors to several venues. Where available, the familiar ‘blue dot’ icon can help indicate a user’s approximate location. This means that when users moves up or down a level in a building with multiple floors, the map will automatically update to display which floor they are on.  At these locations, users can also access indoor walking directions to help them get their destinations more quickly.

An official statement said that to date, Google has worked with 75 partners across 22 cities in India to offer Indoor Google Maps for top indoor venues. Google hopes to add on to this number in future.
