14 Jun 2012

Info Edge-backed online restaurant and event directory Zomato.com is planning to expand its operations and launch in international markets. According to this EconomicTimes report, the Delhi-based start-up is planning to launch its Singapore operations in September 2012, followed by Dubai, Hong Kong and Moscow by 2012 end.

“We have begun the ground work in Singapore and are now in the process of setting up offices and hiring staff for our operations in the four international cities,” Deepinder Goyal, co-founder, Zomato has said.

The company was launched in 2008 as FoodieBay by Deepinder Goyal and his Bain & Company colleague Pankaj Chaddah. Until late-2009 it remained a weekend-venture. In November 2009, Goyal and Chaddah quit Bain to focus on the newly re-branded Zomato.

In August 2010, the company raised $1 million from Info Edge, which runs Naukri.com. In August 2011, Info Edge further invested $3 million in Zomato. Zomato is present in 10 cities in the country and claims to have 3.5 million users each month.
