Reliance Entertainment Digital closes all physical businesses; BigAdda COO resigns

Reliance Entertainment Digital has decided to go for a portfolio streamlining and business restructuring. The company is moving away from all physical businesses like Zapak Gameplex and will be focusing on pure play digital business which ensures higher margin and scalability. The company has also done away with BigAdda Readers Offer business and following this, Shivanandan Pare, Chief Operating Officer of BigAdda has resigned from the company, reports MediaNama.

The company, in a written communication, said that it will focus on business areas which are going to explode with growth of 4G and Broadband including videos, gaming and ecommerce. “The next wave of value creation is going to happen in these areas and we wish to be ahead of any player in India to exploit growth of users once high speed always connected internet becomes a reality,” the company said.

According to Reliance, Zapak.com will continue to leverage on web and lead the AdverGaming business in India. Zapak Plus will be a subscription based service for high end casual gamers who wish to upgrade to more serious games. Jump Games will continue to leverage smart phones worldwide by working on branded licenses. BigFlix+ will be a Netflix equivalent service launched for Indian consumers offering movies on demand service across devices and platforms. BigAdda will focus on ecommerce for building profitable business template instead of having negative or breakeven gross margin business.

As per developments all the digital biz have been put on the block and Reliance wants to get out of it as early as MAr'12.

With their kind of customer support, it is no wonder the business is closed. I think reliance should not attempt to do a consumer business. It is just not in their DNA
