Ecommerce portal WopShop shuts down; founders launch start-up Pokkt
02 Apr 2013

Ecommerce portal for toys; WopShop.com has shut down its operations after one year of its launch in February 2012. The website’s url is flashing the message ‘Site not available’. The development was first reported by Medianama.

Founded by Rohit Sharma, former CEO of Reliance Entertainment (Digital), the website was offering toys for children in the 0-12 year’s age bracket. It also offered daily discounts and offers (like add-ons and freebies) at the time of their launch. The venture was launched in partnership with Vaibhav Odhekar and Sanjeev Singhal both of them are Rohit’s former colleagues from Reliance.

Meanwhile, Rohit and Vaibhav have tied-up with another partner to start a new venture called Pokkt. As per its website, it is a ‘Transactional Advertising Platform’ which rewards customers with offers from online/offline retailers. The customers have to share information to advertisers to avail the offers.

A part of inaugural batch of GSF Accelerator, Pokkt was one of the five start-ups that received funding. The accelerator is a part of the Global Super Angel Forum founded by former Reliance Entertainment president Rajesh Sawhney.

Although Vaibhav’s and Rohit’s LinkedIn profile shows their association with WorkShop Sanjeev Singhal had joined an  Education Startup, Iprof Learning Solutions as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in August last year.

The ecommerce space has been witnessing consolidation with recently Tradus acquiring ecommerce portal BuyThePrice.com, a little over a year after Naspers had invested Rs 8.5 crore in it. Info Edge also wrote off its entire Rs 29.3 crore investment in online shopping website 99Labels.

Before launching any e-commerce site the company should prepare a roadmap for at least the next 10 years, so that they might get ready for challenges which they are going to face later on and will not face any issue of shutting down the company
