01 Dec 2013

"India will be Facebook's number one market in a matter of months, overtaking US", said a tweet by media analyst, Rich Greenfield who attributed this observation to Nathan Eagle, co-founder and CEO of Jana, a mobile tech firm.

In his subsequent tweets also attributed to Nathan, Rich said that 'India's monthly active users (MAUs) will reach 200 million MAUs in 12-18 months vs 115 million today as compared to 147 MAUs in U.S' and '50 per cent YoY Facebook MAU growth from five countries including India.'

Facebook's user base across across platforms has only been growing. As reported by India Digital Review, the financial results for Q3 FY13 revealed 728 million users on average for the quarter ending September 2013. This is an increase of 25 per cent, YoY. Monthly active users (MAUs) were 1.19 billion as of September 30, 2013, which is an increase of 18 per cent over the same quarter of last year. Mobile MAUs for Facebook were 874 million as of September 30, 2013.

The mobile monthly active user base registered the maximum increase of 45 per cent, YoY. Mobile daily active users were 507 million on average for September 2013.

IAMAI recently came out with its report on internet penetration in India, which revealed that the number of Internet users in India reached 205 million in October this year, registering a YoY growth of 40 per cent over last year. By December 2013, this figure is expected to reach 213 million.

A growing internet penetration in India makes India one of the most promising markets for social media giants.
