Zomato acquires restaurant search sites Lunchtime & Obedovat for $3.25 million

Zomato Media Pvt. Ltd., Gurgaon based owner of Zomato.com, has acquired the international online restaurant discovery sites, Lunchtime.cz & Obedovat.sk for a whopping $3.25 million. In order to ensure a smooth transition after the acquisition, both the teams of Czech Republic based Lunchtime.cz and Slovakian Obedovat.sk will be working with the Zomato team to ensure a smooth transition.

Deepinder Goyal, Founder & CEO, Zomato said, “Both Lunchtime and Obedovat have strong business models that cater to the local market needs of discovery of lunch menus. Together, we will be able to build the largest resource of restaurant information in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.” He further added, “We are looking to infuse a further $2.5 million into our operations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia over the next couple of years.”

Last month, Zomato had announced the acquisition of New Zealand-based Menu Mania Ltd for an undisclosed amount.

Founded in 2008 by Lunchtime.cz Ltd., Lunchtime.cz provides its users an overview of restaurants in various cities in Czech Republic, along with enabling users to book food online. With more than 3,000 restaurants listed on its site. Lunchtime is available on iOS, Android and Windows platforms.

“We'll be able to combine our local expertise and focused product offering around lunch menus, with the technology and rich content platform that Zomato brings to the table. The combined product will enhance the user experience by providing them with fresh, more in-depth restaurant information along with lunch menus,” said Igor Treslin, Founder and CEO, Lunchtime.

Slovakia based Obedovat was founded in 2004 by Creative Web Group. It acts like an online restaurant guide and boast of a partnership with over 2100 restaurants.

Zdenko Hoschek, CEO, Obedovat said, “The Lunchtime and Obedovat founding teams have spent a significant amount of time getting to know the founding team at Zomato, and are happy to see their strong focus on building a social restaurant discovery product. We respect their passion, and look forward to the Lunchtime and Obedovat teams becoming a part of Zomato.”

Founded in 2008 by Goyal & Pankaj Chaddah, Zomato has operations in 14 countries including India, the UK, the UAE, South Africa, New Zealand, Philippines, Portugal, Brazil, Turkey, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Qatar. Last year they launched their services in Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton as well.

An online and mobile restaurant discovery service, Zomato provides information such as menus, directions, contact details, pictures and user reviews for over 232,900 restaurants. The firm has operations in 13 cities across the globe. With Zomato providing detailed information about over 232,900 restaurants, it boasts of having 20 million global visitors in a month, mostly through their web and mobile platform.

Till date the company has raised $53.5 million in funding, with the most recent funding of $37 million being from Sequoia Capital and Info Edge.  Techcircle.in estimates that Sequoia Capital picked around 17.2 per cent stake as part of the latest investment, giving Zomato a post-money valuation of around Rs 1,000 crore or around $158 million.
