Wireless data cards may cost less from 1 Apr 08

In his budget speech, India’s finance minister, Palaniappan Chidambaram, has proposed to reduce the excise duty on wireless data cards, which enable laptop users to access internet, from 16 per cent to nil.

If the proposal gets passed by the parliament, data cards would attract zero excise duty with effect from 1 April 2008. According to Techtree, leading telecom operators who sell these data cards plan to pass this benefit to consumers straightaway.
