According to Wikimedia, the grant will be used to strengthen Wikipedia’s content quality by teaching groups how to contribute, and to support efforts to disseminate collected knowledge through traditional media like DVDs and books.

Part of the grant will also be used to support the construction of a Wikipedia feature called Flagged Revisions, which is designed to allow experienced editors to publicly and visibly grade the quality status of articles.

Sue Gardner, executive director, Wikimedia, has said, “This institutional support from Sloan will enable us to make progress on some key goals: increasing quality, broadening participation, and distributing free knowledge to people without internet connectivity.” [Source: ChannelWeb]
