The Chandigarh Administration, in association with a local NGO (non-governmental organization) Burning Brain Society, has launched Chandigarh.TobaccoFreeIndia.com to spread awareness and disseminate information about the laws relating to tobacco control and smoke-free regulation.

The website provides guidelines to be followed by tobacco shops and dealers, educational institutes, private and public offices, hotels, clubs and restaurants. It also offers a ‘violation reporting mechanism’ wherein people can report any violation, which will then be directly routed to the police and the Health department.

“Chandigarh is acting as a role model for other states in the country and we would take all the necessary steps to sustain this position,” Ram Niwas, home secretary, Chandigarh UT (union territory), has said. Chandigarh became the first smoke-free city in the country on July 15, 2007. [Source: Express India , Thaindian ]
