Twitter claims to have signed up 105 million users; adding 300,000 new users a day

Microblogging service provider Twitter claims to have signed up about 105 million users and is adding 300,000 new users every day. According to the company, Twitter attracted 180 million monthly unique visitors on its site in March 2010. The company has also said that 75 per cent of its total traffic comes from people using third party applications, rather than people visiting the Twitter.com site.

To monetise its services, Twitter has rolled out a new advertising programme, Promoted Tweets, which is currently in a trial run and has just five advertisers. According to the company, making money is now a primary goal. “Money is important,” Evan Williams, CEO, Twitter, has said. “It takes a hell of a lot of money to run Twitter. There has to be a very solid revenue stream underneath this to fuel it.”
