TutorVista raises $18 million from Sequoia Capital, LightSpeed Venture

Online tutoring company TutorVista.com has raised $18 million from Sequoia Capital and LightSpeed Venture Partners to fund its expansion into an online-offline education model. The company is also in talks with strategic investors to raise another $15 million independently.

“So six months back, when we looked at opportunities in India, we decided that we cannot apply the global model here,” K Ganesh, CEO and founder, TutorVista.com, has said. India’s low internet penetration was a stumbling block and so TutorVista decided to follow the hybrid model.

In November 2007, TutorVista.com acquired Bangalore-based Edurite Technologies, and the current ramp up focuses on Edurite Technologies, physical brick-n-mortar centres where students get scripted lessons through technology and teachers act as mere facilitators, reports Economic Times.
