Skype introduces ads to strengthen revenue before IPO

Luxembourg-based internet telephony company Skype has introduced advertisements in its service featuring display ads from advertisers like Groupon, Universal Pictures and Visa Inc. According to Skype, the move comes as a bid to develop a new revenue stream ahead of the company’s anticipated public offering.

According to the company, the ads will initially appear in the US, UK and Germany and advertisers can add a ‘click to call” button in the ad and users will be able to share ads to their Facebook or Twitter accounts. Skype said the ads would not interrupt users with pop-up ads or banner ads in the middle their conversations and users will be able to close ads.

The company claims to have an average of 145 million monthly connected users at the end of 2010, but only 8.8 million monthly paid users. The company generated $860 million of net revenues and had a net loss of about $7 million in fiscal 2009-2010.
