BigAdda.com, the popular Indian social networking site run
by Reliance ADA Group, has said that it is transforming its business model to
become an e-commerce portal and will be removing all the social networking
features.

In an email that was sent to all its users, BigAdda has
requested them to download all their personal data including blog posts, images
and audio and video files by July 15, 2011, after which the data will not be
available for download.

“We value and appreciate your long standing support for
Bigadda.com. In the past few months we explored our potential as an ecommerce
portal by providing branded products at profitable deals to you and have found
immense success. We are reaching newer heights everyday and hence are planning
an expansion in the same arena. We request you to download all your personal
collection of blogs, audio files, video files and images from Bigadda.com as we
are scaling down our Social Networking services,” the company said in the email.

BigAdda had 5.5 mn registered users in India and the ecommerce
operations have been operational since last 3 months in pilot phase and during
these three months Big adda has witnessed fastest ramp up of orders compared to
any recent e-commerce player in India. Big Adda has crossed Rs. 2 cr gross
value transactions per month in June and with its aggressive plans for next
months is poised to be one of the leading e-commerce player in Indian e-commerce
space with its combination of readers offer and e-tailing business models.

“This
is a conscious decision to transition BigAdda.com to ecommerce business. The
digital space is dynamic and ever-changing. In 2007 when BigAdda.com was
launched, social media networks were the next big thing in the digital space,
and we believed that local social media platforms would do exceptionally well.
However local social media networks show no potential anymore with dominance of
Facebook and other global players. We believe that the growth drivers of
digital space are ecommerce, gaming and video on demand (VOD). We already have
a strong presence in gaming with Zapak, JumpGames and VOD with BigFlix.com. With this
transition we will cover the third growth driver as well, ” said Rohit Sharma, CEO, Reliance Entertainment Digital.

Launched in August 2007, BigAdda had popular celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan and Harbhajan Singh use it as their blogging platform. “Fans can continue to read the
superstar BigB’s blog daily. BigB’s blog has an identity of its own and will continue to connect Big B
with his millions of fans across the globe,” added Sharma.
