Press Information Bureau set to soon launch mobile app for journalists

The Press
Information Bureau (PIB) will soon launch a mobile application to send
notifications to journalists, refurbish its website for better social media
integration and follow a more proactive information policy on Facebook and
Twitter.

According to a
Economic Times report, a special session was organised for PIB spokespersons
last week where Facebook officials briefed them on how to disburse information
using the world’s largest social networking site. PIB joined Facebook recently,
after having been on micro-blogging site Twitter for a while.

“We have
got over 31,000 likes on Facebook within two months. The idea is to use
Facebook in a much better way to reach out to journalists and people. Our
spokespersons now on will be tagging ministers and ministries to enhance the
reach of the Facebook posts, use photos and videos to send out a more appealing
message and making quality posts rather than every random press release,”
a senior official of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting told the
Economic Times.

The PIB website
is being redesigned to ensure integration with social media as well as the
ability to issue multimedia releases rather than simple written statements.
According to the report,  I&B
officials said the project to launch a mobile application for PIB was also at
“an advanced stage.”

The home page of
the PIB website already has pointers inviting readers to follow it on Twitter
and like it on Facebook, apart from a link to its YouTube channel. PIB has also
started an exclusive handle to tweet in Hindi and is making efforts to ensure
more infographics are used for tweets on events such as the prime minister’s
visits abroad or the government’s special campaigns.

The I&B
ministry is working on starting digital campaigns on Twitter and Facebook to
help spread awareness among the people, ministry officials told the Economic
Times.
