Online book store FlipKart.com launches new product categories: Movies, Music, Games

Bangalore-based online retail book store FlipKart.com has launched three new product categories, namely Movies, Music and Games. According to FlipKart, its customers can now buy CDs and DVDs of movies, music and games at discounts of up to 22 per cent. The content largely includes English and Hindi titles and around 5 to 10 per cent of regional titles.

FlipKart claims to have more than 20,000 movie titles and over 12,000 music titles in Hindi, English, Bengali, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi and Bhojpuri. According to FlipKart, the company is working with all major labels including Moser Baer, T-Series, Big Video, Times Music and EMI. The games catalogue includes games for devices like PS, PS2, PS3, Wii, Xbox and PCs.

To begin with, FlipKart hopes to sell over 3,000 CDs and DVDs per month and this number is expected to increase to around 20,000 CDs and DVDs a month by the end of 2010. FlipKart, which claims to sell more than one book every minute, also plans to start selling software like Norton Anti-virus, Adobe and Windows.

Sachin Bansal, CEO, FlipKart, has said, “The move to include movies, music and games on the FlipKart menu is a definitive statement about our intent to be a major player in the ecommerce space in the country. Our pioneering experience in online retailing of books and the considerable customer loyalty that we have earned will hold us in good stead as we make our first moves beyond the world of books.”
