MumbaiVotes.com, which offers the database of Mumbai’s 1,500 politicians, has been selected by Harvard University for research. The portal was launched in 2008 by Vivek Gilani who wanted to create a permanent and comprehensive record of all the candidates contesting elections from his city at various levels so that he could select and vote for the most deserving ones.

“I found MumbaiVotes.com to be a database of information on politicians, their work and their track record. I also found that the portal has over 100,000 visitors — who would have made an informed decision in electing their leader,” Hollie Gilman, a doctoral student at the Harvard University Department of Government, who was recently in India for the purpose of research, has said.

MumbaiVotes.com claims to have more than 4,500 news reports from 12 newspapers and links to more than 400 video interviews of MPs, legislators, officials of the municipal corporation and other candidates directly linked with Mumbai. The portal also offers record of the elected representatives’ attendance in the legislature and the number of questions raised by them during the working hours. One can also check out a candidate’s criminal record on the portal. [Source: Economic Times]
