Microsoft offers cashback to users of Live Search

Microsoft has launched a Live Search cashback program that offers cashback to users when they purchase products from cashback listings on MSN Live Search.

A cashback search shows a user the bottom line price of products which is the price that includes tax and shipping costs. A user can then compare a product according to its bottom line price and be eligible for cashback when he purchases it. The cashback is accumulated and after a cashback account reaches $5 in savings, the user can claim hard cash.

An advertiser on the other hand is only required to pay MSN when a product is purchased thus making it a risk free proposition.

The move is being seen as an attempt by Microsoft to better compete against Google’s rising domination of the global search business. However, the challenge isn’t getting easier for Microsoft. The latest numbers from comScore highlight that Google’s search market share in April rose to 61.6 per cent in US from 59.8 per cent in March 2008. During the same period, the market share for Yahoo’s search engine fell to 20.4 per cent from 21.3 per cent, while that of Microsoft dropped to 9.1 per cent from 9.4 per cent.
