Online travel company MakeMyTrip.com has launched a green initiative under which air passengers booking tickets on the website will receive an estimation of their carbon footprint for the journey and an opportunity to offset it by contributing towards afforestation programmes run under the aegis of GiveIndia by Seva Mandir in Rajasthan.

According to MakeMyTrip, the initiative has already received an enthusiastic response from air travellers. In just a month since launch, the programme has resulted in collection of over Rs 2 lakh, used entirely for planting trees. On ground, this translates into the planting of 18,000 trees and a green cover of 50,000 square feet.

“Travellers have responded very favourably to this green initiative, demonstrating that they are aware of their responsibility to the environment. Not only have a significant number adopted this initiative within a month of its launch, a quarter of the contributors have chosen to make the maximum-possible donation,” Deep Kalra, founder and CEO, MakeMyTrip, has said.

It is estimated that an air passenger on a Delhi-Mumbai round trip typically leaves a carbon footprint of 200 kilograms of CO2. A carbon footprint is defined as ‘the total set of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by an organization, event or product’. It is often expressed in terms of the amount of carbon dioxide, or its equivalent of other GHGs, emitted.

Headquartered in Gurgaon, MakeMyTrip claims to have over 50 per cent market share of the Indian online travel business. The company further claims to sell over 12,000 flight tickets, 1,000 hotel room nights and over 100 holiday packages a day. According to Omniture Web Analytics, MakeMyTrip.com attracts over 3.5 million unique visitors a month. MakeMyTrip is targeting sales of Rs 2,500 crore in the financial year ending March 2010.

The online travel industry in India is estimated to be worth $6 billion by 2010. According to industry estimates, online travel is expected to corner around 23 per cent share of the country’s total travel market by 2010.
