Local language mobile app Newshunt raises $19.4 mn from Falcon Edge, Sequoia, Others

India’s local language
mobile app Newshunt has reportedly raised $19.4 mn in Series C funding round led
by Falcon Edge Capital.

This round also
saw participation from existing investors Matrix Partners India, Sequoia
Capital India and Omidyar Network, reports the Economic Times. This brings the
total funding round to date to around $40 million.

India’s local language
mobile app Newshunt has reportedly raised $19.4 mn in Series C funding round led

Capital India and Omidyar Network, reports the Economic Times. This brings the
total funding round to date to around $40 million.

Newshunt is the
platform for local language mobile internet users with over 75 million downloads
so far. Users can pay for downloads through Newshunt’s proprietary payment
platform
iPayy
that is now also being used by third party developers for
micro-transactions through carrier billing.

“The next 500
million mobile Internet users that will emerge in India will largely be local
language first — they will create and consume content and services in local
languages. Our vision is to be a dominant part of their first Internet
experience and serve these users with world-class products starting with
Newshunt, eBooks, iPayy and many more to come,” Viru Gupta, Founder and CEO of
Newshunt told the Economic
Times.

Gupta further
added that the company wishes to to partner with the entire local language
ecosystem in India and help in building the first real, large scale ‘Made in
India, Made for India’ platform.

Newshunt is the
flagship product of Ver Se Innovation, and it claims to offer news from over
100 news sources in 12 languages. The platform has  forayed into e-books
segment
as well.
