Just Dial, an online telephone
directory company, has lodged a police complaint in the Bangurnagar police
station in Malad, Mumbai, alleging that a rival listing company Clear India
Pvt. Ltd. has stolen its database of 9 million clients.

A case has been
registered under various sections of the IPC and the IT Act. The police have
traced the roots of the accused company to the United
States and Punjab.

Raman Muttukrishnan, Manager at Just
Dial filed the complaint, accusing Clear India of stealing the online phone
directory giant’s database and then using the database for the benefit of their
own business.

The letter said
this is a deliberate attempt to sabotage their business and malign the
company’s reputation.

In the written complaint, Muttukrishnan
stated that Just Dial is a registered company with a database of nearly 9.1
million listings and the whole database was allegedly stolen by the accused.
Just Dial also accuses Clear India of sabotaging their business and maligning
the company’s reputation.

The complaint
further alleged that Clear India, without permission, accessed their computers
and their system networks, and copied the data. Even the junk data which the
company uses for testing has been stolen.

Apparently this matter came to
light when Just Dial started receiving complaint calls from their disgruntled clients.
The displeased clients informed the company that all their information and
details were now available on different websites that they had never
approached.

JustDial immediately checked its
internal system and other website and came to know about the theft. The company
then immediately lodged an FIR with the police station in Malad.

The police suspect the
involvement of an insider in the case.

A Bangurnagar Police officer was
quoted in MumbaiMirror as saying “It’s not possible without someone from Just
Dial helping the accused. We are recording statements of the staff and checking
CCTV footage. Being a cybercrime, it is a lengthy process, but the accused will
be tracked down soon”.

An internal investigating team at
JustDial has found out that Clear India is not a registered company though they
have their own website. Clear India belongs to some Singh brothers based in the
US. The company also has a branch in Chandigarh and a police team has already
been sent to the place for further investigations.

Recently JustDial received a letter from the Government of Karnataka,
allotting 15 acres of land to the company, on a leasehold basis for a period of
99 years, to establish an IT/ITES – BPO and Software Development Centre (IT
Park) at Devanahalli Industrial Area in Bangalore. The company is currently
evaluating the letter and is in the process of placing the proposal before the
board of directors for consideration and approval.
