Following Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee’s budget announcement to launch a new portal and sell railway tickets at lower booking charges, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) has planned to slash charges on booking e-tickets on IRCTC.co.in. The Minister had announced that the service charge levied on A/C tickets will be revised to Rs 10 from the current Rs 20 and charges on sleeper class tickets will be Rs 5 from the present rate of Rs 10. IRCTC too proposes to bring its rates down by a similar amount.

The Railways has proposed to launch the new portal in the next financial year and IRCTC sells around 3.5 lakh tickets daily. On a similar customer centric move from the organisation, July 2010 saw IRCTC bar e-ticket agents from getting access to tatkal bookings from 8 am to 9 am. The agents were also barred from accessing the IRCTC website for the first hour on the first day of advance reservation period, which opens 90 days in advance.
