India Post launches mobile app & sets up e-commerce centre, targets online players

India Post recently launched a mobile application and an e-commerce centre at Safdarjang, New Delhi that will handle e-retailing exclusively. 

India Post recently launched a mobile application and an e-commerce centre at Safdarjang, New Delhi that will handle e-retailing exclusively. 

According to a Hindu Business Line report, equipped with modern technology, the India Post centre will be capable of handling 30,000 parcels per day. Online companies such as Amazon, Paytm, Yepme, Snapdeal, among others are already using the Postal Department’s services for their parcels.

The mobile app for India Post is Android-based and includes features such as real-time tracking, post office search and postage calculator, reports the Hindu Business Line. Through such facilities, the parcels can reach up to far-flung and remote areas of the country. India Post has over 1.55 lakh post offices, of which more than 1.39 lakh are in rural areas.

“I want that in e-commerce, India Post should become the largest player and you have to do it. If you take four steps, I will take 10 steps with you because I am seeing that in India, e-commerce has got a very good future,” Communications and IT Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad, was quoted in the report as saying.
