In March 2011, ICICI Bank received 5.9 million users whereas HDFC Bank got 5.7 million users. The State Bank of India online property received 4.42 million users for the same month.

The report analyzed the user activity on the websites of both public and private sector banks including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Citibank, State Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Punjab National Bank etc. The insights are drawn from the actual observed behaviour of a sample of 4000 online users out of the ViziSense India panel of over 1,25,000 users.

According to the report, 52 per cent of the users came from non-urban parts of the country. State Bank of India has witnessed maximum usage from outside metros whereas Citibank usage is primarily driven by metros. Users spent maximum time on HDFC Bank and Citibank sites while comparatively much lower time was spent on ICICI.

“Given reduced transactional costs and higher reach through online banking, banks have been highly successful in getting a significant chunk of their urban user base to engage with their online properties. Higher adoption of online banking will fuel rapid growth of ecommerce and online payments in India,” Amit Bhartiya, GM, ViziSense, has said.
