Offering a new
way for app developers to promote themselves, search engine giant Google reportedly
plans to pilot sponsored search results in Google Play in the next few weeks.
The pilot
program allows mobile application developers the ability to advertise their
apps directly within the Google Play store.

According to a Mashable
report, these sponsored results will include an orange “ad” tag, like
you see with paid search results online. Clicking on the ads will direct you to
an app instead of a website, though. In the coming weeks, Google says a
“limited set of users” will see the ads from some advertisers who are
already running search ads for their apps.

According to the
company the program will help users discover new apps. Of course, this is also
a potentially lucrative new ad business for Google as well, reports Mashable.

Google Play now
reaches more than 1 billion people on Android devices in more than 190
countries. In the past year, the company paid more than $7 billion to
developers distributing apps and games on Google Play.

“With more than
100 billion searches every month on Google.com, we’ve seen how search ads shown
next to organic search results on Google.com can significantly improve content
discovery for users and advertisers, both large and small. Search ads on Google
Play will enable developers to drive more awareness of their apps and provide
consumers new ways to discover apps that they otherwise might have missed,” Michael
Siliski, Product Management Director, Google Play said in a blog
post
.

Siliski added, “In
the coming weeks, a limited set of users will begin to see ads from a pilot
group of advertisers who are already running Google search ads for their apps.
We’ll have more to share in the coming months about the expansion of this
program as we look at the results and feedback. We believe search ads will be a
useful addition to Google Play for users and developers alike, and we hope this
will bring even more success to our developer community.”

In another news,
in its official blog, Google
announced its ‘Android for Work’ program, which will provide improved security
and management features for corporations that want to give their employees
Android smartphones.

Smartphones
supported by the new initiative will be able to keep an employee’s work and
personal apps separate, and a special Android for Work app will allow
businesses to oversee key tools such as email, calendar and contacts. Google
said it is partnering with more than two dozen companies including Blackberry
Ltd, Citrix Systems Inc, Box Inc.
