Google accuses Microsoft of using its web search results in Bing

Google claims it has conducted experiments that suggest that Microsoft’s search engine Bing is using a combination of tools like Internet Explorer 8 and Bing Toolbar to send data to Bing on what people search for on Google and the Google search results they click and then showing those results from Google on Bing.

Google claims it has conducted experiments that suggest that Microsoft’s search engine Bing is using a combination of tools like Internet Explorer 8 and Bing Toolbar to send data to Bing on what people search for on Google and the Google search results they click and then showing those results from Google on Bing.

“At Google we strongly believe in innovation and are proud of our search quality. We have invested thousands of person-years into developing our search algorithms because we want our users to get the right answer every time they search, and that’s not easy. We look forward to competing with genuinely new search algorithms out there—algorithms built on core innovation, and not on recycled search results from a competitor,” Amit Singhal, Google Fellow, has said.

Reacting to Google’s charge, Harry Shum, corporate vice president, Bing, has said, “We use over 1,000 different signals and features in our ranking algorithm. A small piece of that is clickstream data we get from some of our customers, who opt-in to sharing anonymous data as they navigate the web in order to help us improve the experience for all users.”

“When Bing launched in 2009, the joke was that Bing stood for either ‘Because It’s Not Google’ or ‘But It’s Not Google’. Mining Google’s searches makes me wonder if the joke should change to ‘Bing Is Now Google’,” Danny Sullivan, editor-in-chief, Search Engine Land, has said, adding, “I think Bing should develop its own search voice without using Google’s as a tuning fork.”
