Fashion discovery app Wooplr raises $5 mn from Helion Ventures

Fashion discovery app Wooplr has raised $5 million from Helion Venture Partners to expand its team and presence.

Founded in March 2013 by Praveen Rajaretnam, Arjun Zacharia, Soumen Sarkar, and Ankit Sabharwal, Wooplr has about one lakh users, about 80% of whom are women, reports the Economic Times.

Founded in March 2013 by Praveen Rajaretnam, Arjun Zacharia, Soumen Sarkar, and Ankit Sabharwal, Wooplr has about one lakh users, about 80% of whom are women, reports the Economic Times.

“Currently all shopping is catalog-driven. We’re making it location, need, and interest-driven,” CEO Arjun Zacharia told the Economic Times.

As the users upload details of what they bought and where they bought it from on Woolpr , their friends discover shops around them and identify what items to buy when they’re on the go, instead of looking through static catalogues presented by e-commerce companies.

In doing so, the company drives business into local mom and pop stores, and plans to charge these shops on a subscription basis once they hit the critical mass of five million users. 

Jaspreet Bindra, an angel investor in the company, along with member of Indian Angel Network Sunil Kalra and a few others, invested $150,000 in the company last September. Wooplr said more investors could add to the Series A round in the near future. The other angel investors are Sunil Kalra, Rahul Khanna and Vivek Pandit.
The company currently has 14,000 shops listed on its website and plans to increase the count to 100,000 in the coming year. 

“We had a conversation with existing e-commerce players. What excited them was it was not just a product catalog, it was a strong engagement platform,” Zacharia, who wants to reach out to five million users the next year, was quoted in the Economic Times report as saying.

The platform has curated content and users can follow popular people in their area to understand what’s trending in fashion, home decor and the like.
