Social media giant Facebook has kicked off a new product named ‘Today In’ to focus on local news, events and announcements. The product under testing phase currently is available for users is US cities New Orleans, Little Rock, Billings, Peoria, Olympia, and Binghampton.
The bottom-right menu button on Facebook can be used to access this feature. The feature under testing phase will be powered by a machine learning (ML) software.
“What was it like outside of our homes? You probably didn’t have to wonder much if you followed the coverage by local news outlets,” reads a Facebook post.
Facebook’s News Partnerships team, headed by NBC news anchor Campbell Brown will approve the local news publishers, informed Facebook spokesperson.
“The move comes as part of Facebook’s Journalism Project announced in January last year to curb the spread of fake news on its platform and build out local news partnerships, the spokesperson said.
Last year, the social media giant also tested products to connect its users to local news, including the Facebook Local standalone app.
