Facebook Messenger has quietly rolled out voice calling
service in India. To begin with, this feature was first made available to iOS
users in US and Canada in January 2013, the service was made available to
Android users in April, in the same year.

However the voice calling service for Facebook Messenger has
seen a simultaneous launch for iOS and Android platforms. In order to be able
to make these calls, both the caller and the receiver need to have the
messenger installed on their phones. Users logged into the messenger through
the website will not be able to avail this facility.

Though there are no calling charges, but users will pay the
data costs for their respective subscribers.

To make a call using the Facebook Messenger, Android users need
to select a friend and select ‘Free Call’ from the menu. iOS users on the other
hand can make a voice call by selecting a friend and clicking on the ‘i’ button.

That said, users won’t receive a normal phone call. Instead
they’ll receive a push notification on their screens with the caller’s name.
Also, users can only connect with a conversation partner who also has Facebook
Messenger for Android installed on their phone.

Users cannot ring up a
Facebook friend who is logged in through the website, and mobile or landline
numbers cannot be dialled.
