eBay India launches mCommerce initiative

eBay India today has announced the launch of a mobile web application which will provide Indian online shoppers an opportunity to access eBay through their mobile phones. The application is designed for all GPRS, EDGE and 3G enabled mobile phones and other smartphones including BlackBerry, iPhone, Android and Nokia. Users can now search, compare and buy products through their mobile phones by logging in and providing their credit or debit card numbers as per the RBI guidelines.

Users can now search, compare and buy products through their mobile phones by logging in and providing their credit or debit card numbers as per the RBI guidelines.

The company has also launched an SMS-based search service that will allow users to search and locate the cheapest listings of any particular product on eBay India website through SMS. Users will need to type in ‘EBAY’ followed by the product name and send an SMS to 567678. The company will send two cheapest listings of that particular product along with the item codes.

Speaking to AlooTechie about their mobile initiative, Muralikrishnan B, director, marketing and product, eBay India said, “According to a PricewaterhouseCoopers research, 3G will reach to 107 million users in India and this will provide a revenue opportunity of Rs 10,000 crore by 2015 only through data services. These numbers are huge and this made us take a step towards this direction.” The company is promoting the mCommerce initiative through SMS and online marketing.

According to Muralikrishnan, 15 million iPhone users have downloaded the eBay iPhone application and one out of every three iPad users use an eBay iPad app worldwide. eBay.com users worldwide trade $2,186 worth of goods on the site every second.

Speaking about eBay India, Muralikrishnan B said that there are over 2.5 million registered users and these users come from over 3,296 cities in India. At any given time, there are over 800,000 live listings on eBay India across 2,000 categories of products. Approximately 12,800 sellers use eBay India as a primary or secondary source of income.
