Delhi High Court has adjourned its hearing of a petition by
Google Inc. and Facebook Inc. until August 7, 2012 to terminate criminal
proceedings against them for allegedly hosting objectionable material on their
sites.

The development means that a lower court’s trial of the
companies will move ahead on May 23 in Patiala House court in New Delhi. If
convicted, company executives could face fines or jail time. High Court Judge
Suresh Kait said executives for the companies are not required to appear at the
trial.

On January 13, 2012, the Central Government had
allowed the prosecution of the social networking sites, saying the content was
instigating enmity between different groups on the ground of religion and was
against national harmony. Petitioner Vinay Rai approached the trial court to
remove allegedly objectionable content from 21 websites including Facebook,
Google, Yahoo and YouTube.
