Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation, which runs Indian Railways online passenger reservation site IRCTC.co.in, has barred web-based ticket agents of IRCTC from getting access to tatkal bookings from 8 am to 9 am. The agents will also be barred from accessing the IRCTC website for the first hour on the first day of advance reservation period, which opens 90 days in advance.
Passengers have been complaining of the IRCTC website crashing as soon as the tatkal booking commences at 8 am. Within minutes, all the Tatkal tickets get booked. Then the IRCTC website starts functioning normally all through the day. The allegation is that this is done to benefit the IRCTC agents, as one is forced to go through them to book tatkal tickets, having to pay a heavy premium.
The move will, however, be temporary in nature. "We want to give individuals a chance to book their ticket without any problem and if passenger complaints are addressed through this move we would implement the decision permanently," an official of Indian Railways has said. With this move, we want to curb the menace of touting as passengers have often complained of.
