Adepto Solutions launches Facebook app Trol.ly for online retailers

With its social media application – Trol.ly – Mumbai-based startup Adepto Solutions has become one of the few Indian companies to have created a software product that leverages the power of social media for online retailers.

According to Kiran Kumar and Prem Pillai, who left Google to start their company Adepto Solutions, what ‘Search’ was to last decade, ‘Social Media’ is to this one. Business leaders are increasingly trying to understand the relevance of social media to their businesses and ways to leverage and benefit from it and the online retail industry is one among them.

After leaving Google, Kiran Kumar and Prem Pillai came up with the idea of an application that would harness social networking sites to promote ecommerce.

“The power of social marketing is very strong, and we wanted to develop solutions for merchants that were engaging. We noticed that the use of ‘share’ button on Facebook has increased a lot over the last few months. Hence, we decided to work around this objective,” said Kiran Kumar, co-founder and CEO, Adepto Solutions.

“The challenge before retailers is how to connect a social networking user to their products. How do you ensure that your products are getting publicity on social networking sites but at the same time this is not getting intrusive for the users? This is what Trol.ly accomplishes,” explained Kiran Kumar.

According to Kiran Kumar, the word of mouth publicity is the Holy Grail for social media marketers these days and this is what Trol.ly attempts to create. Simply put, Trol.ly creates conversations between a customer and his or her friends whenever a purchase is made.

“Rather than simply sending alerts to the buyer’s friends, the application makes use of a quiz like format to generate curiosity. So, if a person has bought a book, Trol.ly will generate a question like “‘X’ has a book authored by ‘Y’. Can you name another book by this author?” Right answers will give the person discount coupons or gift vouchers, further increasing chances that they will make purchases with the store,” added Prem Pillai, co-founder and CTO, Adepto Solutions.

“We chose Facebook because it is currently the No.1 when it comes to the social media platform in India. According to recent numbers, 19 million Indian users are active on Facebook. One in every three Indians who are online is on Facebook. I understand that many users are overlapping on Orkut, but the reason why we didn’t go for Orkut was due to the lack of technology it offered. Facebook gave us a developer friendly platform which made it easy for us,” said Prem Pillai.

According to Prem Pillai, the value for the merchant is how often and how many customers keep coming back to his site. By providing incentives to users and by using word of mouth publicity through social media, there are high chances that merchants will derive more sales.

Trol.ly aims to do the branding and help merchants engage with their consumers and fulfil their demands. The company is also considering to include location-based and interest-based targeting of brands. Trol.ly’s current clients include HomeShop18.com, BuyThePrice.com, and SnapDeal.com.

So far, Adepto Solutions has launched its Trol.ly app in India, but since the ecommerce market is huge in US, the company wants to venture in that space too. “India is still in the nascent stage of ecommerce. We still have time with us to expand ourselves,” concluded Prem Pillai.

    Simple & powerful… great tool. A must for all product websites, whether ecommerce enabled or not. It would be great to see how Trol.ly can go beyond Facebook in terms of innovative engagement methods on other social channels such as Twitter.
