70% of Indian youth spend over 30 minutes a day on internet: Survey

According to a survey conducted by Tata Consultancy Services, 85 per cent of the Indian youth use Google to find information and are also hooked to one or more social networking sites. The survey, titled, The Web 2.0 Generation Survey 2010, also reveals that 70 per cent of the Indian youth spend more than 30 minutes every day on the internet. For the survey, TCS polled over 10,000 school going children between the ages of 12-18 in 11 cities across India during 2009-10.

Ajoy Mukherjee, vice president, head, global human resources, Tata Consultancy Services, has said, “Nearly half of India’s total population is under the age of 20 and classified under the youth category creating a group of over 459 million – more than the whole of the American population. This sizeable generation is already shaping the country and will play an incredibly important role in the direction that the nation takes next.”

According to Ajoy Mukherjee, Tata Consultancy Services plans to use the survey findings to understand the next generation better. “It will help us not just to find the best students, but also guide us as to how and what we communicate with them. This is the new, socially connected India that is important for all of us to better understand,” Mukherjee has added.

    Sad, I thought TCS would ensure better quality check as far as the data is concerned. Wonder which 10,000 schools were included in the survey ! Just imagine 54% of school going kids accessing internet on their mobiles !

    And which research agency might the culprit be!

    Few pointers would be helpful :
    1. Classification of the Youth demographpy- students , working executive , business people etc ..
    2. Male / Female ratio
    3. How are they accessing net – device ..mobile , lap top , wifi etc
    4. What si the e commerce possibility …and why the low e commerce still ..
    5. why media revenues still lower …

    may need a deeper understanding of the behviour around this medium ..

    Sample size of only 10k in 11 cities (less than 1k in each city) that too only school going children for such detail report is not enough to claim 70% of Indian youth using internet even for less than 15 mins.
