The survey also reveals that about three quarters of the respondents have been using social networking websites for more than two years while two-thirds of the respondents spend more than half an hour on each session.

The Nielsen survey found that as many as 82 per cent of the respondents surveyed use social networking sites to keep in touch with the people they know. Some 58 per cent said they joined a social networking site to reconnect with old acquaintances they had lost touch with. Around 53 per cent said they joined a social networking site to make new friends. Only 43 per cent of the respondents said they joined these sites for professional networking purpose.

“The biggest advantage of a social networking site is how you can build and use the network with friends, business associates and people with similar interests. These days, the world has become a global village, and social networking sites are bringing people closer together and helping them to interact and share their thoughts within the group, no matter where in the world they are,” N S Muthukumaran, director, online research, The Nielsen Company, has said.
