54% of MasterCard users in India have used internet for shopping: Study

According to a survey by MasterCard Worldwide, 54 per cent of respondents from India used internet for shopping in the fourth quarter of 2008. The top three popular online purchases included airline tickets (54 per cent), home appliances and electronic products (48 per cent) and CDs/DVDs/VCDs (44 per cent).

The survey, which covered 5,037 respondents across 10 markets in Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa, also reveals that the average frequency of online purchases in India increased to 2.9 in the fourth quarter of 2008, as against 2.6 during the same quarter in 2007.

“Online shopping is growing in popularity, as consumers realise the convenience and ease of shopping online,” T V Seshadri, vice president and country general manager, South Asia, MasterCard Worldwide, has said. “Interestingly, among all the markets surveyed, India is the only one where the 18-29 year age group has the highest average spend on online shopping.” [Source: Business Standard]

    These are encouraging results. The percentage is bound to increase and the main reason for this would be the ease of shopping online. However, there is one concern which hits the minds of the online shopper and that is the quality of the product. there have been instances wherein the products purchased online where not good inquality & hence reduced the confidence of the online shopper.
