According to Manish Vij, co-founder, Smile Interactive Technologies Group, the first job of every internet entrepreneur is to analyze the trends of his or her own website and study what visitors are doing or saying on the site. Vij was speaking at the Internet Entrepreneurship Workshop organized by PeerPower.com in association with Wirefoot in New Delhi on June 19, 2010. “Spend time with the consumers and try solving their problems. This will earn more consumers,” Manish Vij added.

Manish Vij further said that generating good connections with the consumers is equivalent to marketing the product. Talking about the importance of social media as an effective marketing tool for startups, Vij said, “One should try to create media rather than buying it. Make consumers your brand ambassadors.”

According to Manish Vij, while making marketing pitches, web startups should go for free tools such as Google Trends and ViziSense and there is actually no need to pay a hefty amount for a comScore access. Vij further suggested that startups should look forward to ride on partnerships with bigger brands to drive value and growth.

Ankur Dinesh Garg, CMD, Wirefoot India, said that if anyone has an idea that can enhance an offline experience on internet, it is bound to be successful. “Internet and mobile are information mediums and hence the idea should revolve around generation and distribution of information,” added Garg.

Garg further said that technology is the heart of every internet business and this should not be outsourced. Besides, search engine optimisation (SEO) is more about understanding your consumers than technology.

Alok Mittal, managing director, Canaan Partners India, said that availability of cash is a much bigger issue than valuation rate and hence startups, while pitching a VC, must have an introduction to the business, strengths of the team, the market opportunity, what solution is being offered, what is the competitive landscape, a profitable business model, and the risks involved. But before that, startups should identify the right VC for their businesses.

According to Alok Mittal, if a VC sees a superior business, quality of delivery and depth of management team, existing market opportunities and a viable exit plan, he does not hesitate to invest his money.

Pawan Gadia, vice president, Ferns N Petals, said that startups should be open to suggestions from peers and mentors. Giving an example from his own experience, Gadia said that initially FnP.in used to take 20 seconds to load. “After it was pointed out to us by one of our mentors, we got it redesigned and made it faster. Our orders increased by 30 per cent,” Gadia added.

  1. There is no defined
There is no defined prerequisite of spending 15% of your time studying website. It all depends on your overall strategy. If i say marketers should spend their time on the treadmill thinking about new creative ideas, would that mean its considered to be talking point. All these conferences are just conceptualization of wasting time and building network when people involved are already known to each other. Nonetheless, its an opinion and everyone has it. I think i should shut up and get out of here now.

  2. Ok i forgot to mention one
Ok i forgot to mention one thing. Mt garg comments is SEO is understanding consumers and not technology. Respected sir, thats why traditional marketers failed in digital because they dont know how to compliment these two pieces together. SEO pages are build with the help of technology after studying keyword trend, not the consumer. Consumer will be shown what Google shows on top.

I do agree with Pawan there, feedback from everyone should be taken in the right spirit if you are running your own business and consider that it will help grow business.

Sorry for being so blunt about gentlemen comments.

  3. 15% time translates to 15%
15% time translates to 15% of 12 hours = 1.8 hours = 108 minutes everyday on Google Trends & Vizisense.

I wonder how people quantify such activities. I expect people to say something really useful in such conferences for the benefit of entrepreneurs. These are too general and useless suggestions.

  4. I think these kind of
I think these kind of platform should be utilised well for discussing the real issues faced by entreprenuer and solutions or approach to tackle those issues rather than making very general statements which almost every entreprenuer knows. Also, some new and young entreprenuers should be part of the panel rather than same old chaps who are present in all confereneces and speak the same language

  5. Look at Alok Mitta
Look at Alok Mitta statements too. Alok should share more valuable tips about business plan, growth strategy in Indian market, how to tackle scalability issues in Indian context etc but he ended up making generic statements. I sometimes feel, Alok and Harish invest in mutual funds and just call themselves VCs to sound sexy.

  6. Too too generic statements
Too too generic statements made by these guys. No insight, no knowledge shared.
Alok Mittal, your speeches are pretty common in all conferences, you need to come up with more drilled down approach on business plan, growth strategies.
Mr. Garg, SEO can not be what you have said, SEO is first understanding your business and how well you justify your business through keyword analysis and there respective insertions in content and metatags etc. I believe that you are talking about Consumer behavior analysis, that should not be treated in scope of SEO.
Pawan Gadia, you were honest and your presence was really appreciated among the audience.

Peerpower, we all would love to see you coming up with better propositions.

We, the audience would love to listen new, innovative things rather then 1990s speeches and also would like to hear from the Horse’s mouth (like Pawan).

    Best,
    Rahul

    1. The senior management of digital agencies should spend 90% of their time in the next 3 months to understand wtf is Internet ! – for heaven’s sake, understand how to read nd analyse a comscore report, at least

    2. The Digital marketing heads in corporates should shamelessly agree that they know nothing about Internet and should spend a month in training with a Internet company understanding the space from scratch.

3.Publishers should stop selling inventories to any damn digital agency that talks SPL and CPC language. Anyway, there is no point in selling inventory to these guys since none of them pay even the peanut after 4 months. Run google ads and block all indian brands 😛

    4. Every damn digital agency should launch consumer portals and understand the cost of running a INternet business.

    5. Dear Digital agencies, Stop hiring friends and relatives. We need some grey power desperately 😛

    6. Ad networks – Pls shut shop. You guys cant run a business on gas forever 😀
